Having burst on to the scene 10 years ago with a No. 1 debut single ('Ghost') and album ('Chapter One'), Ella Henderson has since ascended to a multi-platinum selling, two-time BRIT Award nominee, with over a billion streams to her name - all by the age of 26.
To date, Ella has achieved five UK Top 10s as a lead artist, the most recent being 'Let's Go Home Together' with Tom Grennan – one of 2021's biggest songs and an Ivor Novello nominee for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
Earlier this year, Ella released her long-awaited second album 'Everything I Didn't Say'. Heralded by powerful lead single 'Brave' and a showstopping performance on The Graham Norton Show, the record debuted in the Official Charts Top 10, becoming her second to do so.
A hit songwriter and powerhouse vocalist, Ella has collaborated with musical luminaries including Ryan Tedder and Babyface, as well as superstar DJs including Sigma and Kygo. Currently featured on smashes from David Guetta ('Crazy What Love Can Do' with Becky Hill) and Nathan Dawe ('21 Reasons'), Ella looks set to soundtrack summer '22
Love can make you giddy. It breaks your heart. Makes you a little crazy. Sends you into dizzying highs and crashing lows. This is what Emeli Sandé dives into on her sublime fifth album, How Were We To Know.
By now, the world is well-acquainted with the Scottish artist's spectacular voice. Whether you heard its power at the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2012 Olympics, or encountered it during one of her countless sold-out headline shows around the world, there's no mistaking it. And on this latest project, released just a year after her critically adored fourth album, Let's Say For Instance, Sandé is using that voice to its full, astonishing potential.
"I definitely got a lot off my chest on the last album – being with a new record label has given me so much more freedom," Sandé, who recently signed a deal with the independent Chrysalis Records, says. "There was a lot I wanted to say about myself, and I hope that through the lyrics people will get to understand me on a deeper level." There's no doubt that her millions of fans will feel even closer to her after hearing How Were We To Know, which Sandé notes is "very much" about relationships. "These are tales from a hopeless romantic," she says with a laugh. "I'm very romantic, and it gets me in trouble sometimes!"
How Were We To Know's 11 tracks explore intimate encounters with love in all its forms, along with the risk required to pursue it. "Once you've been hurt, it's very hard to pick up the pieces again and allow yourself to be vulnerable," Sandé says. "So I think these songs explore the bravery of love, and loving others but also yourself. These songs were pieces of a puzzle I had to put together, and now feels like the right time to share them." Into each track, Sandé has poured her heartbreak, grief and joy; there are lyrics that speak to the grief of a relationship that broke down, and to the bliss and heady rush of something that's just beginning to bloom.
From humble beginnings as a shy teenager growing up in rural Aberdeenshire – the daughter of a Zambian father and a mother from a working-class Cumbrian family – Sandé has risen to become one of Britain's most successful and respected artists, awarded an MBE for services to music in 2017. Even as a child, singing for her was freedom, and a safe space in which to discover her identity. She attended medical school in Glasgow before deciding to take the leap and pursue her dream of a career in music. Upon moving to London, she met producer Naughty Boy, with whom she wrote and contributed vocals for north London rapper Chipmunk's irrepressible 2009 hit "Diamond Rings", as well as Naughty Boy's debut single "Wonder" in 2012.
Sandé's own debut, 2012's Our Version Of Events, arrived after she was announced as the winner of the Critics' Choice prize at the BRIT Awards, in a blaze of critical acclaim and praise from legendary artists including Madonna and Alicia Keys. Featuring hit singles including "Heaven", "Read All About It" and "Next To Me", Our Version Of Events was the biggest-selling album of the year and remains one of the best-selling records of the 2010s.
In a way, How Were We To Know is Sandé coming full circle, as she found she was able to have full creative freedom on an album that is so personal, and be guided by her own instincts. "I think this is the first record since the first where I've had enough time to work out what I really want to say," she explains. "Our Version Of Events covered everything that took place in my life before I moved to London, and so you had this slow marinating of the songs. This album is the same, with lockdown giving me time to let the music do its own thing, which is so exciting."
For How Were We To Know, Sandé assembled many of the trusted producers, mixers and engineers who worked with her on her previous four albums. This includes Mac & Phil, who co-wrote and produced the majority of her second album, Long Live The Angels, and Ollie Green, with whom she collaborated on 2022's Let's Say For Instance. First single "There For You" was written with music manager and writer Daniel Caruana, with its origins as a piano-based track evidenced in the bridge. "Daniel usually writes for rappers but one night I was at the piano and I asked him to write a hook, he most definitely delivered! Love the chorus! Everything came together so naturally!" Sandé said.
It opens in a soft haze. Sandé's voice is a diaphanous lilt: "Even though it hurts, I'll still be there for you," she pledges. The track is laced through with subtle Eighties references, from the thrum of the bass to the classic sound of the Yamaha DX7 and, of course, the euphoric saxophone solo. "The song itself is about how I'll always have love for the people I've been with," she says. "Even if I'm pissed off with them for a couple of years, I'll always care for them – I'll always want to know they're OK. Because once you've committed to that love with someone, it doesn't just go away."

James Arthur is poised to share a completely new side of himself, having undergone a journey of personal growth and self-acceptance that has led to some of his best music to date. The British star's remarkable sixth album, Pisces, comes hot on the heels of 2024's chart-topping Bitter Sweet Love, which was supported by a sold-out arena tour in the UK and Ireland. It's a work with human connection at its heart, influenced by the Brit Award-nominated artist's experiences as a father, a partner and a friend, melding influences spanning pop, rock, Americana and indie.
The album's title, Pisces, speaks to his intuitive, empathetic and multifaceted nature, but also to the dichotomous sound that permeates these songs. Fans will hear tracks that represent the push-and-pull of his longing to be understood, pitted against his instinct to hide away from the world. Some are hushed and introspective, while others blaze with life: "I've always been a dreamer, quite sensitive," he says. "That crossover between dreams and reality was something that really spoke to me for this record."
Take lead single "ADHD", a stirring ballad inspired by Arthur's own diagnosis with the condition just last year. "It explained a lot," he says, "and since then I've started to grow a lot closer to the people in my life. I'm getting to know myself better, too." The track unfolds with rich percussive twangs on the guitar, before Arthur reminds listeners about the raw power of his voice on the emotional chorus: "Black heart that I wear on my sleeve/ Old flames still messaging me/ Between that and the ADHD/ You should run a mile."
"I had to lay out all of my flaws in order to be able to move on," Arthur says. "For a long time, I didn't know how to celebrate the wins – I was looking for validation in the wrong places, wondering why I hadn't been given my flowers after coming from nothing, and putting everything I had into this. But that kind of attitude is never going to serve you, it won't help you grow." Those familiar with Arthur's journey will know how he shot to fame after winning the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012, going on to release hits such as "Say You Won't Let Go" – to date one of the biggest-streamed singles of all time – and fan-favourite ballads like "Train Wreck" and "Naked".
They're likely less familiar with what took place before then. Arthur touches on his difficult upbringing on "Celebrate", a heart-rending and ambitious anthem that tussles between the past and the future. "I've come a long way from nowhere," he tells himself. "I've given up on friends of mine/ Cos when I needed friends they weren't there/ A phone call could've saved my life… I don't wanna hate myself no more." There are whispers of an electric guitar that play out like flashes of lightning on the edge of a storm. A far-away voice calls out as Arthur asks, "Can anybody hear me? Can anybody help?"
Meanwhile, on album opener "Summer", which unfurls slowly with soft strums of guitar and Arthur sings in a low murmur: "I've always been an arsonist/ It's always been my party trick/ For warming up the darkness in my veins." Then his voice lifts to a vocodered falsetto, redolent of the sepia-toned warmth of Bon Iver. Suddenly, the track explodes into life with thrashing riffs and thunderous drum beats, as full of vitality as the July sun.
"I knew I'd have a more positive outlook on life if I was able to let go of the past," Arthur says. "It felt like the perfect introduction to the album, giving listeners an insight into how I see things sometimes. It feels very positive, like new beginnings."
Arthur didn't always feel this way. Around the beginning of 2024, he found himself suffering from a series of health issues and feeling burnt out by a relentless touring schedule. "It was a down period for me, basically," he says. "I was feeling burnt out and sorry for myself… but that was the catalyst for getting me into the studio, trying to express myself."
He invited his regular collaborator, producer and songwriter Steven Solomon (Perrie, Dean Lewis, Dermot Kennedy) to his home studio, where there was no gameplan, just a desire to create music that moved them. "I guess I wanted it to be different from my earlier projects," Arthur suggests. "I think a lot of people have come to expect these big emotional ballads, the raspy vocals… this album shows a different side to me. It's the most personal one I've done, for sure."
The theme of growth courses swift and strong through the veins of the record. Arthur has found himself inspired by fatherhood, after the birth of his daughter, Emily, in 2022. "When I get in the studio now, there's this added motivation to create something I'm really proud of, and that hopefully one day she can be proud of as well," he says.
So he flexes his creative muscles on "Cruel", an imagined love letter to someone who's been placed on a pedestal in the past. Over soft acoustic strumming, he sings in a sweetly lilting croon before a brass section smartly interpolates Abba's "Dancing Queen". There's a woozy sax line on rap interlude "Gucci", which recalls Mercury Prize-winner Loyle Carner's introspective hip-hop. On "Friends", too, Arthur demonstrates his emotional acuity as he pays tribute to late actor Matthew Perry.
"Like a lot of Friends fans, I was basically raised by those characters, so his death was just very sad, and made me think about how this keeps happening," Arthur says. "I've been in a place where that could have been me, so the news of his passing impacted me a lot." Amid the buzz of TV static, he riffs on the famous theme song, singing: "So when the rain starts to pour, I'll be thinking about you/ So no one told you life would ever be this way…Why was no one there for you?" The song is made even more pertinent in the wake of Arthur's fellow X Factor alumnus, Liam Payne, who tragically died aged 31 in October 2024.
"I remember when I came off X Factor and I was going through a dark patch, and Liam heard about it through a mutual friend," Arthur recalls. "He asked our mate if he could speak with me, and he felt like he'd been through something similar. It always stuck with me that he did that."
That questioning of what might have been continues on "Embers", a soulful, pared-back track that reminisces about "all the simple dreams that we always talked about". Meanwhile, "All My Love" has all the sweeping cinematic romance of a Bruce Springsteen number, racing along a propulsive beat as a jangling guitar hook plays out. The title of "Karaoke" is almost a red herring, as it powers through a grunge-indebted guitar line, while Arthur reaches out to a partner dealing with the trauma of a past relationship. He sings the chorus like a mantra: "I want you dancing on the table, want you making a scene/ I want you acting like a nightmare while you look like a dream."
In the past, some critics have rushed to dismiss Arthur as a one-trick pony, perhaps blinkered by the ballads that have racked up hundreds of millions of streams and countless radio plays that, in 2024, saw him become one of a rare group of artists to win the Brits Billion award. He throws down the gauntlet on "Yeah, No", a thrilling, breathless rock number, before diving into the depths of "Water", another curveball that sees him switch from a sultry rock croon into an emotionally wrought cry. On "Hallelujah", he tussles with questions of faith that have grown louder since the birth of his daughter.
"Really, I just want to give my fans an insight into how I've been feeling over the years," he says. "I think it's going to surprise a lot of people. This is me at my most vulnerable."

"ABC's Martin Fry is a revelation, a soul man supreme, belting out pristine Vegas glitter pop and uptown House in his electric blue lounge suit. An ageless performer, Fry is the missing link between Bryan Ferry and Jarvis Cocker. For the inevitable encore of 'The Look of Love' he returns dipped in sparkly gold lame, a self-ironising pop genius on top form." - Stephen Dalton NME
ABC has enjoyed a glittering career to date. Very definitely one of a number of groups who came along and kick-started the Eighties with their own brand of pop for a 'new decade'. On it's release in May 1982, their debut album 'The Lexicon of Love' crashed straight into the UK album charts at number one. Showcasing the hits songs 'Tears Are Not Enough', 'Poison Arrow', 'The Look Of Love' and 'All Of My Heart'. A ground-breaking collection of modern love songs. With a majestic production from the legendary Trevor Horn it remains a classic to this day. Voted by many as the best British album of the decade.
ABC's second album 'Beauty Stab' was a very different proposition to the polished beauty of 'The Lexicon of Love' and spawned the hits 'That Was Then But This Is Now' and 'SOS'. It developed a much rawer, hard-edged sound. These were protest songs from a band that was constantly evolving.
Next came the 1984 album 'How To Be A Zillionaire'. ABC again conquered American audiences with a series of devastating club mixes and pre Gorillaz animated cartoons. 'How To Be A Millionaire', 'Be Near Me', alongside 'Vanity Kills' and 'Ocean Blue' were all Billboard dance chart number ones. The emphasis here was unashamedly electronic.
1987 saw the release of their fourth album 'Alphabet City', co-produced by Chic's Bernard Edwards. By the summer the worldwide hit 'When Smokey Sings' had powered its way toward the top of the American charts. Representing a return to luxuriant soul, alongside the songs 'The Night You Murdered Love' and 'King Without A Crown' the album captured the cosmopolitan feel of the moment and is both urban and chic. Heavy MTV rotation and an appearance on legendary show Soul Train cemented even greater success in the U.S.A for the band.
Inspired by the burgeoning House music scene 'Up' the fifth ABC album reflected the euphoric and uplifting spirit of the times. 'One Better World' an idealistic and Ibiza influenced anthem champions the radical changes that were taking place in music in London, Manchester, Chicago and Detroit in 1988.
In 1991 ABC began work on an ambitious soul pop extravaganza 'Abracadabra'. Releasing 'Love Conquers All' and the Black Box mixed 'Say It' the following year.
'Skyscraping' in 1997 represented a tour de force of gilt edged ABC. 'Stranger things' and 'Only The Best Will Do' embrace Glam inspired rock and roll. Collaborating with artists as diverse as King Britt in Philadelphia and David Arnold in London ABC continued to experiment and entertain.
In 2007 Martin worked on several songs for the romantic comedy, Music and Lyrics starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. He also served as Grant's vocal coach for the movie, his influence being very evident in the final edit.
April 2008 saw the release of ABC's first studio album in over 10 years. 'Traffic' was a collaboration between Martin Fry, David Palmer (who had been in the ABC line-up during 'The Lexicon of Love') and Chuck Kentis. The magnificent first single 'The Very First Time' was a massive hit on BBC Radio 2, with the follow up 'Love Is Strong' demonstrating that even now 26 years on from 'The Lexicon Of Love', Martin Fry's song-writing, stage craft and musicianship is still as contemporary as it was in the beginning.
On April 8th 2009, some 27 years after its debut release ABC performed the album "The Lexicon Of Love" in its entirety to a sell-out audience at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall. The epic performance introduced by Producer, Trevor Horn, and accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, reunited not only Martin Fry, David Palmer and Trevor Horn, but also original backing vocalist, Tessa Niles and Academy Award winning musician, arranger and composer, Anne Dudley, who originally orchestrated the album and who conducted the orchestra on the night. The night was electric with audiences joining in on every lyric! Martin has since repeated this formula with the ABC band and Anne Dudley, performing shows with the 40 piece Southbank Sinfonia across the UK.
2012 saw both a professional and personal highlight for Martin when more than 30 years after he graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in English Literature he returned to be made an honorary Doctor of Music for his contribution to music. Accepting his doctorate on stage during the university's graduation ceremony, he also saw his daughter take to the same stage later to receive her own degree.
In 2016 Martin signed to Virgin/EMI Records and released 'The Lexicon Of Love II'. A mere 34 years since the release of the first ABC album, ABC return to the scene of their most resounding triumph with the May 27th 2016 with the release of 'The Lexicon Of Love II'. Sonically doffing its cap to the original, it features 10 brand new songs from the pen of Martin Fry abetted by various musical cohorts. It might take a less innocent, more experienced view on affairs of the heart than its million-selling predecessor, but it still concludes that all you need is love.
Foremost among Fry's collaborators on the new album is Academy Award winning musician and composer Anne Dudley, who arranged the strings on the original Lexicon; she has provided orchestral arrangements that give 'The Lexicon Of Love II' its signature sound, and has co-written two of the key songs on the album: 'The Love Inside The Love' and 'Brighter Than The Sun'. Other songwriting partners include Grammy award winner Rob Fusari (Beyonce, Lady Gaga), film composer Charlie Mole and Marcus Vere. Production is by Gary Stevenson and Martin Fry.
The album debuted at #5 in the UK album charts with four Radio 2 A – List singles.
In June 2022 ABC celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the release of The Lexicon Of Love with a sold out UK Orchestra Tour, performing at Sheffield City Hall and the exact date the album was released 40 years prior. Following these shows Sky Arts filmed their own ABC special recorded at the London Palladium in November. The special was aired in June 2023.
In 2024 following on from the success of the Anniversary Tour and the TV special in January ABC once again embarked on a sold-out 21 date Orchestra tour of the UK playing to over 35,000. In August the band joined Howard Jones for the first of two sold out US tours, the second taking place in February 2025.
To end this year ABC once again hit the road for another UK orchestra tour in October – November.
Marc Almond is an internationally acclaimed and successful artist. He has sold over 38 million records worldwide and is an icon and influence to a generation of musicians.
He was born in Southport, a seaside town in the north of England, in 1957. After an unsettled childhood of moving to Harrogate, Leeds and back to Southport, of illness and learning difficulties he finally left school at 17 with few qualifications. As a teen he worked in Southport Theatre and on Southport fairground while singing in a local band, covering hits of the day. After school he spent five years at art college including a three year Fine Art BA course at Leeds Polytechnic where he left in 1979 with a BA Honors. At art college he developed his style of mixing experimental performance and cabaret pop with music and film studies. He began visiting London and worked in Soho during college breaks, documenting his experiences in his early performances; Zazu, Twilights and Lowlifes and Glamour in Squalor. It was at Leeds Poly that he met David Ball and together they formed the internationally successful 'electro duo' Soft Cell in 1979.
Soft Cell were signed to Stevo's underground label Some Bizzare and licensed to Phonogram as part of the new electronic music phenomena. They went on to record four albums; three in New York including the iconic seminal Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, and had a number of top ten hits including the international classic Tainted Love. Tainted Love broke all records as the track that remained the longest in the US Billboard Top 100 and received a Brit award for best single of that year. Soft Cell's arrangement of the track has been covered many times by artists as diverse as Marilyn Manson and The Pussy Cat Dolls and has been sampled by a generation of dance producers for artists, notably Rihanna's SOS.
Soft Cell parted amicably in 1984 to pursue solo projects. Marc had already branched out with Marc and the Mambas, a loose collective of musicians, and recorded the innovative influential double album Torment and Toreros which Marc has called 'a nervous breakdown put to music'. Mambas shambolic and florid musical shows put Marc in a unique musical place that had one foot in mainstream and the other in the underground. Marc has always been one of very few artists able to comfortably move from one to the other. Torment and Toreros was influenced by Spanish Flamenco, Marc has always used World Music influences in his music from Turkish torch songs to Brazilian Macumba and Russian folk. The Mambas use of a full string section inspired a young Antony Hegarty later of Antony and the Johnsons. Antony has always openly cited Marc as the person that without whom it would not have been possible for him. The Mambas started Marc on his path as a chansonierre troubadour, a singer of the songs of others that he would make his own, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker, Lou Reed, Juliette Greco, Nico, Syd Barrett - all early influences of Marc. Marc has said that his style comes from Jacques Brel and Marc Bolan glam with a bit of Aznavour and Johnny Ray thrown in, add some 60's Joe Meek and Orchestral Pop and some 60's Northern Soul, a pinch of Music Hall and you have something approaching Marc. It is this mix of styles that have made him hard to pigeonhole, but also totally unique. He has been called over the years The Judy Garland of the Garbage Heap, The Acid House Aznavour, Jim Reeves of the Bedsit Generation, Marc Bolan and Juliette Greco's love child and Britain's own Piaf.
A diverse and acclaimed successful solo career followed with over a dozen albums including Vermin in Ermine, Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters, Enchanted, Open All Night and Stranger Things, and a number of solo chart hits including Tears Run Rings, Stories of Johnny, A Lover Spurned, Adored and Explored, Jacky, The Days of Pearly Spencer and Child Star. In 1989 Marc had another number one, a duet with 60's legend the late Gene Pitney, a cover of one of Gene's hits Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart. It was number one in Britain for five weeks. The album it came from, The Stars We Are, was Marc's most successful solo album in the USA.
Marc has worked with a number of acclaimed producers including Mike Hedges, Trevor Horn and Marius DeVries as well as more experimental producers such as Iceland's Johann Johannsson. He's also had licensing deals with a number of major labels including Phonogram, EMI, Warners, Universal, Rough Trade, Echo, Tres Bis XIII, Sanctuary and Virgin.
In 1987 he recorded two sister albums, one of French Chansons Absinthe, specially translated songs made famous by Juliette Greco, Barbara, Leo Ferre, Robert Nyal and poetry of Rimbaud put to music and an album of Jacques Brel songs, many never sung in English before, called Jacques. The estate of Brel cited him as being the best living interpreter of Brel's songs.
In 2000 Marc worked briefly again with David Ball on a Soft Cell tour and an album, Cruelty Without Beauty. Critics and fans were warm and welcoming, and they even reached the top 40 with a hit, a cover of Frankie Valli's The Night, a song they nearly recorded back in 1981 instead of Tainted Love.
In 2000 Marc went to live in Moscow and was invited to record a project of music that has become dear to his heart, Russian Folk and Gypsy Romance. Produced by Russian musical prodigy Andrei Samsonov, Heart On Snow features collaborations with some of Russia's biggest musical legends and stars, the icons of Russian folk Luydmila Zekina and Alla Bayanova, Boris Grebenchikov, Ilya Lagutenko as well as the Russian Naval Choir and the famous Rossiya Folk Orchestra. Although largely ignored in the West, Marc looks on this album as one of his most successful records. It was an adventurous and highly creative project never before undertaken by a Western artist, and it has taken him back to Russia many times to perform in public and in private beloved Russian songs to Russians. He has been dubbed in the Russian press, 'adopted son of Russia'.
Marc was going through a musical renaissance in 2004. He had performed a residency of shows at London's Almeida Theatre that had received unanimous, glowing praise from both critics and audiences alike, when he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. He was in a coma for two weeks and sustained near fatal injuries that took the next few years to recover from. Marc has overcome many obstacles and ups and downs in his life, including drug addiction, and it was one more battle, but the motorcycle crash was his hardest fight. He had to learn to sing again with the help of top vocal coach Mary Hammond, and regain his shattered confidence. After Antony Hegarty bought him back on stage as a surprise guest at his London show in 2005, he began to slowly gain vocal and physical strength and today he is performing and singing better than ever.
He returned to the studio to record Stardom Road, an album of songs that had been part of his life and, in a way, told his story. It was produced by long time friend Tris Penna and Marius de Vries and with guests Antony, Sarah Cracknell and Jools Holland. Marc, still not back to full strength at the time of recording, looks on this album as his recovery album. It was well received by critics and fans and Marc's music was re-discovered and re-appraised. Marc undertook a number of short appearances, at Patti Smiths Meltdown performing Brecht, Marc Bolan The Celebration where he performed with legendary producer Tony Visconti and made an appearance for the first and only time with original Tainted Love singer, and Marc Bolan's partner, Gloria Jones on a duet of the classic song, tribute shows to Sandy Denny the late great folk artist and one of Marc's favourite singers, and Dusty Springfield for the BBC backed by a 70 piece orchestra, and with Current 93. Marc was also a special guest singer on Jools Holland's 2006 and 2008 tours. Marc is a regular guest and collaborator with Jools and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. He gave a lifetime achievement award to The Doors at the 2007 Mojo Awards. He also made various DJ and PA club appearances - all to help build his stamina and confidence after his crash. 2008 saw him back performing full sell-out shows in Britain, Europe and Russia. To celebrate his full return to the stage he performed a retrospective show on his fiftieth birthday to ecstatic fans.
Marc has enjoyed many diverse collaborations during his career, Nick Cave, Siouxsie, Nico, Jools Holland, Bronski Beat, Rosenstolz, John Cale, David Johannson, Kelli Ali, Current 93, Coil, PsychicTV, Antony and the Johnsons, Baby Dee, Little Annie, Matt Johnson, Jim Thirwell, Ferry Corsten, 60's icons Gene Pitney and PJ Proby whom he produced an album for in 1998 entitled Legend. Marc has written many songs but prefers to sing songs by other writers and artists, saying it frees him from his own baggage allowing him to express the things he wants to, in sometimes a better way than he can write himself.
He still enjoys occasionally working in electro Dance music, collaborating with underground Dance producers, though his true heart lies in the marathon Chanson, folk and 'twisted pop cabaret' shows he calls the Sin Songs Torch and Romance Shows. These shows have been recorded in 2004 at London's Almeida Theatre and in 2008, the double live album/DVD, Marc Almond in Bluegate Fields Live at Wilton's Music Hall, was released showcasing Marc back at his best as a live performer and curator of song. These recordings along with 1992's Twelve Years of Tears at The Albert Hall are the best testaments to Marc in concert.
2009 saw the release of another set of Russian Gypsy Romance and Folk songs, a collaboration with Russian producer and arranger Alexei Fedorov - Orpheus In Exile, the songs of the late Russian Gypsy Romance singer, dissident and now gay icon Vadim Kozin. The album sold in excess of 45,000 copies and received rapturous reviews. Marc also collaborated with musician and arranger Michael Cashmore on a series of limited singles, decadent poems of Count Stenbock and Jean Genet amongst others, set to music. The project, Gabriel And The Lunatic Lover, was released on the Durtro label.
As well as a huge body of recordings, Marc has also had two best selling autobiographies, Tainted Life and In Search of The Pleasure Palace, as well as three books of verse; The Angel of Death in the Adonis Lounge, A Beautiful Twisted Night and The End of New York.
In 2010 Marc recorded a brand new mainstream album, Variete, which was released in June to much critical acclaim. Variete celebrates Marc's 30th year as a recording artist and it is his first complete album of self-written songs since Open All Night over a decade before.
2010 was a milestone celebration year for Marc, his thirty years in music as a recording artist, with his most successful tour to date, All The A's, Hits And A Sides. 2010 Also saw Marc presented with the Hero Award by Mojo Magazine. The year ended with a special one off concert at the beautiful Wilton's Music Hall.
In 2011 the album Feasting with Panthers, a collaboration with musician and arranger Michael Cashmore, was released. It featured poems of Count Eric Stenbock put to music as well as decadent and homoerotic poems by Jean Genet, Jean Cocteau, Paul Verlaine and Rimbaud. Marc took part in the unique music-theatre work Ten Plagues held at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre from 1–28 August 2011. Ten Plagues is a one man song cycle based on Daniel Defoe's journal of the Plague Year (which dates back to 1665), with metaphors of AIDS and epidemics. It was a collaboration between Marc, theatre director and designer Stewart Laing, libretto author Mark Ravenhill and composer Conor Mitchell. The show won the Scotman's Fringe First Award.
In 2012 Marc took the role of the Greek Stoic philosopher Seneca in the Paris Théâtre du Châtelet's experimental rock adaptation of Poppea based on Monteverdi's original 17th century opera The Coronation of Poppea also starring ex-Libertines Carl Barat, Benjamin Biolay, Fredrika Stahl, Valerie Gabail and Anna Madison. On 9 August 2012 Marc performed at Antony Hegarty's Meltdown Festival in London's Southbank. He sang the whole Marc And The Mambas Torment And Toreros album live for the first time. Some of the original musicians on the album also performed: Gini Ball, Anne Stephenson, Martin McCarrick, Jim Thirlwell and Lee Jenkinson. Hegarty sang "My Little Book Of Sorrows" with Marc. At the end of 2012 Marc took time off for an operation and subsequent recovery from spleen and gall bladder removal.
In May 2013 Marc revived the Ten Plagues play for a month at Wilton's Music Hall in London, based on Stewart Laing's original direction and the Edinburgh Traverse Theatre's production with new direction by Hester Chillingworth. The production was a success both with audiences and critics. Also in May of that year he received an Ivor Novello Inspiration Award presented by Vicki Wickham. Marc recorded tracks with legendary producer and orchestrator Tony Visconti for an EP The Dancing Marquis for later release. He also recorded vocals for a project with acclaimed composer John Harle called The Tyburn Tree for a February 2014 release. He set up a production company Lab Entertainment (The name made from the initials of people involved) for development of films, television, music and books. Lab's first project is a DVD of Ten Plagues. In October Marc was awarded an Icon Award by Attitude Magazine. He was special guest of Ian Anderson for a performance of Jethro Tull's classic record Thick As A Brick at the Albert Hall. He sang sections from both Thick As A Brick part one and part two. He performed the James Bond theme Thunderball at a tribute to lyricist Don Black at the Festival Hall.
In 2014 the record of The Tyburn Tree (Dark London) was released to good reviews and Marc and John Harle toured the piece with a large musical ensemble and a theatrical presentation in the Spring. A mini album collection called The Dancing Marquis (in dedication to the colourful and eccentric Henry Paget 5th Earl Of Anglesey) was released in July featuring tracks recorded with Tony Visconti and tracks written for him by Jarvis Cocker, Carl Barat and with Steve Nieve. He guested singing After All in a performance of David Bowie's classic album The Man Who Sold The World with a collection of musicians featuring the albums original rhythm section and producer Tony Visconti and Woody Woodmansey. He spent most of the year touring with Jools Holland while preparing projects for 2015.
Marc's solo album, The Velvet Trail, was released in March 2015 and was closely followed by a sold-out European tour. In November 2015 Marc, together with poet Jeremy Reed and Composer Othon, made an album of Pop Operetta, Against Nature, based on the book A Rebours by J K Husymans and funded through Kickstarter.
Marc performed with Leeds College Of Music Contemporary Orchestra And Pop Choir at The Royal Festival Hall in July 2016.
November 2016 saw the release of the much lauded Trials Of Eyeliner, Marc's eagerly anticipated box set anthology released through Universal Music.
Following Trials Of Eyeliner, Marc released a Greatest Hits collection, Hits And Pieces, once again through Universal, in March 2017. With so many career highlights featured within the 2-disc set it was no surprise to see the album push Marc firmly back into the UK Top 10 and this was further supplemented with a number of high profile TV and radio appearances. Shortly after the album's release came a sold-out UK tour culminating in a triumphant show at London's Roundhouse.
Marc unveiled a brand-new album, Shadows And Reflections, in September 2017, his first for the BMG label after signing a new 3 year two album deal. A labour of love, it was a heavily orchestrated collection of baroque pop nuggets from the 1960's for which Marc is revered. Shadows And Reflections was followed by a 20 date orchestral UK Tour.
Mr Almond had the great pleasure of accepting the honor of OBE in March 2018.
The seminal electronic duo Soft Cell (Marc Almond/Dave Ball) celebrated their 40th year in 2018 with the release of their anthology, through UMC, on 7 September 2018. Entitled Keychains & Snowstorms: The Soft Cell Story, this ten-disc Box Set featured nine CDs and a DVD, encompassing both phases of their illustrious career from 1978 to 1984 and the 2001-3 reunion. It's the story of 21 million records sold worldwide. 13 UK chart singles, five of them Top 10 hits, two gold and one platinum selling albums.
In September 2018 Soft Cell played a sold out show at The O2 in London. It was a celebration of the band's finest moments from their 40 year career.
Released in February 2020, (at the beginning of the Covid crisis) Almond's next solo album, Chaos and a Dancing Star, also written with Chris Braide and recorded in Los Angeles, was released in January 2020. Ian Anderson plays flute on the album.
It was during the Covid 19 lockdowns, with time to spare, that Marc and David Ball wrote a new Soft Cell album, Happiness Not Included. This would be their fifth studio album released on 6 May 2022 through BMG Rights Management, and one of their most successful critically and commercially.
The album contained 12 new tracks, including a collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on the track Purple Zone, which made No.1 in the UK Chart, and a duet, NightHawks, with the acclaimed US performance artist and singer Christeene.
In May 2022, Marc played a Bauhaus show Love & War at the Barbican Theatre with his long-term collaborator John Harle.
In 2022 Marc relocated to Portugal where he currently lives.
Throughout 2023 Marc toured with Soft Cell across the world performing a US tour, and headline festival appearances.
2024 will see the release of his second album of cover songs for BMG (as yet untitled), accompanied by a tour of the UK, and Soft Cell will perform dates for the first time in Brazil and Australia.
Chesney Hawkes became one of the biggest pop stars of his era with his irresistible mega-hit 'The One and Only' which has since had well over 100 million streams across digital platforms and is officially one of the top 20 most successful songs of the 90s. Having spent an unprecedented 5 weeks inside the Top 10, and reaching the coveted spot of a number one chart spot. 'The One And Only' became one of the most synced songs in TV and film history.
Chesney has recently re-ignited his career with his singles 'Get A Hold of Yourself', 'Live Forever' and 'Loud', landing on Radio 2's A-list and performing a Radio 2 Piano Room -the singles will feature on his new album 'Living Arrows' which is out on 4th April 2025. Off the back of playing sold-out arenas in Europe supporting James Blunt, Chesney's 'Live In '25' UK headline tour will be his first in over a decade, and follows his sold-out London show at the 02 Academy Islington last year.
'Living Arrows' is Chesney at his most vulnerable, completely free of inhibitions or doubts. There is heartache, yes, but there is joy, too, and gratitude for everything he has in life. Combined with his heartfelt, candid style of songwriting, the album's cohesive pop-rock sound creates what is not only his greatest work to date but also the most authentic representation of the man behind the artist. The 'Living Arrows' album was produced and co-written by the BRIT Award winner and Grammy nominee Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, One Direction) with multiple co-writes alongside long-time friend and collaborator, 80's legend Nik Kershaw. As well as the classic 'kick the doors down pop/rock bangers', mental health struggles are a recurring theme in the album, which is also reflected by the news that Chesney has become an ambassador for the suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). Chesney Hawkes is back…. Finally….
